CAT | DB Weeks
Although DB Week 2011 is still over a year away interest is building in taking part in this event to be held for the first time on the magnificent sailing waters of Portland Harbour. And already we have two previous champions, Gerry Philbrick (1986 & 1992) and James Hewitt (2010) looking for boats in which to participate
The photos of this week at Rock over Spring Bank Holiday have been re-organised and are now in two albums: -
Ladies & Cadets together with a general selection
Click on one of the above as required.
Where there is no attribution the photo was taken by Martin Hough and his daughter

I found these photos recently. They are b/w and I have no idea who took them or passed the negative strips to me. One puzzle is the boat with sail number 523 as such a number does not feature in the results.
Anyway the photos will be found here

Well the week went by in a flash but then it was compressed from the usual 6 days sailing into 5. After a blustery start for the first two races on Sunday we had superb sunshine for the rest of the week even if the wind was on the light side until the final race on Thursday. The Long Distance race was cancelled by the Race Officer when there was no wind at the start time of 10:30.
The racing was dominated by James Hewitt and Rachel Bullingham sailing in DB 635 borrowed from Wendy Davies with four straight wins. For those interested in such facts James is only the second non PYC competitor to win the National Championship in a clinker type hull. ( The first was J. Harrison in DB 32 in the first championship in 1957).
The results for the weeks points racing can be seen by clicking here
And Wendy Davies has supplied a fine collection of photos of the 5th Points Race taken from the cruiser she and Roy had sailed round to Salcombe just in time for the Quiz Evening . They can be viewed here

Peter Hewitt who is liaising with Salcombe YC on behalf of the YWDB Assoc reports as below: -
“The last call we had from John Morrell was a bit of a bombshell. In a nutshell, the estuary is classed as an SSI with sea horses and rare molluscs so the Harbour Master cannot provide our usual trot. Neither John Morrell nor we had any inkling of this problem when we started talking in August. Other options to keep the boats afloat have been looked at, without success, so the only choice left to us is to “dry sail” from Batson.”

Salcombe is a very popular holiday centre and accomodation gets very booked up so it is a good idea to book as far ahead as possible.

Support for helms who want to improve their helming
6 Comments · Posted by Diana in DB Week 2009
Hi
I was also thinking that DB week would be a great opportunity for a bit of support for helms who want to improve their helming. With so many experienced helms around, it would be wonderful to set up a new race where ‘improver’ helms are randomly allocated an experienced helm who would crew for them and give them advice on how their boat is set, racing technique etc. I am sure there are some people who would love a bit of advice but don’t really know how or who to ask (I’m lucky – I’ve got my father!).
What do people think?
